What RICS matrics
members say…
Helen Loney
RICS matrics Cumbria
“I have made close friends through RICS matrics and we were able to support each other through our APC and beyond. I have also developed extensive professional contacts, which has provided me with a useful resource for my day-to-day professional work. Through being involved in RICS matrics committees, I have helped organise social, careers and CPD events, and fundraisers. This has developed my networking and communication skills and enhanced my confidence.”
Charles Fifield
RICS matrics Chairman 2007-08
“Through my involvement with RICS matrics, I have found skills such as event organising, public speaking and presentation, which are truly beneficial in my day-to-day work. On the personal side I’ve made great friendships, it’s given me confidence and I’ve had a lot of fun along the way. I highly recommend it to all new entrants into the profession.”

“The RICS matrics has been invaluable to my progression through the industry. When I graduated three years ago and was new to the profession it was incredibly helpful to have a social and professional network of young surveyors in various stages that have helped me through the transition from a fresh-faced graduate to a near fully qualified surveyor. I have found that contacts made at an early stage can often be priceless when hunting for a placement or eventually for a job.”
Have fun, get ahead and acquire new skills alongside other like-minded young people by joining RICS matrics.
All work and no play can make Jack a very dull surveyor, so RICS offers a social and support network for young and would-be surveyors called RICS matrics.
Whether you’re a sports mad action man who fancies the organised activities like paint-balling and go-karting, you love the idea of donning fancy dress for a posh ball or two, or you’re keen to progress your career through networking events, RICS matrics has a lot to offer you.
Who can join?
Members of RICS matrics are newly qualified surveyors with less than 10 years’ post qualification experience, trainees and students. Currently over a third of RICS’ membership across the world is eligible.

What is the RICS matrics?
There are four key aims of the organisation:
1. Promotion of surveying as a career – RICS matrics members act as grass root volunteers to support careers activities within schools and universities. Student liaison officers are currently being sourced in all RICS accredited universities.
2. Recruiting students to RICS matrics – matrics membership could help you on your way to your chosen career. Students can benefit from mentoring schemes (currently being piloted in the North East and the West Midlands), access to literature, support forums and university visits from qualified surveyors, providing advice and career opportunities within a social environment.
3. Supporting trainee members to achieve their APC – RICS matrics will help stop you feeling stressed and alone when you strive for your professional qualification. As well as access to online forums and literature, RICS matrics members can share experiences with other trainees through self-help groups, one-to-one sessions and mock interviews.
4. Career progression – RICS matrics is a great way to get ahead and an invaluable tool for an ambitious young surveyor. Networking and skill development activities provide useful opportunities to swap information, ideas and experiences, and could possibly lead to your next job or contract. With over 35 local RICS matrics groups across the UK, you have access to technical and professional competency events, new members’ receptions, sporting events, inter-professional events and black-tie dinners. Where better to meet your potential new boss than on the dance floor?
What are the other benefits?
Through RICS matrics, members have the chance to voice their opinions and help shape the future profession of surveying. RICS matrics gets the most out of the RICS membership, offering social events, business networking opportunities, advice and information and access to well-respected leadership roles that enhance your CV.
