Being made redundant for three determined surveyors turned out to be just one door closing to allow another one to open. When other leading surveying companies had to make Nicholas Swetman, Nick Marsden and Emily Thomas redundant this year, Cooke & Arkwright took them on, as well as two other new recruits, a move that is intended to strengthen the company’s current position and to prepare for when the property market improves.

Cooke & Arkwright’s chairman, Roger Thomas, explained that while the recession has made things difficult, it would be short sighted to pare back staff members:

“It’s important to preserve continuity of the high quality, professional service that our clients have come to know and expect, and that means retaining sufficient levels of staff throughout our services. When the economy picks up we will be well placed to respond to increased demand.

“We have been delighted to welcome our new recruits on board during the course of the year, and to provide them with the opportunity to progress their careers and contribute their individual qualities to our professional teams.”

Nicholas Swetman joined Cooke & Arkwright’s retail department; Nick Marsden joined the rating department and is currently training for his APC; Emily Thomas has joined the property management department; Kate Simpson recently joined the office agency as a senior surveyor; and Jason Ross is now a property manager, having previously worked for an estate agents as a sales negotiator.

Cooke & Arkwright is one of the leading chartered surveyors in Wales, with its headquarters in Cardiff, and has been providing property services and professional advice for over 100 years.
